Bands for punching power - Part 3 of 4. Getting "pop" on the end of a punch.
Bringing a significant level of power into a punch is always going to depend on explosive action by the legs, hips and core musculature. But there is definitely an upper body component that contributes. Getting a "snap" or "pop" on the end of a punch is accomplished by aggressively protracting the shoulders.

The MOST IMPORTANT boxing skill you’re not currently training. Proper, consistent visualization prevents us from being complacent about our defense, movement, positioning and mindset when training on the bags, shadowboxing, etc. It’s a mentally difficult skill to train but the payoff is worth the effort. If the core musculature can't handle the power coming from the hips, you have zero shot of transferring that power into the punch and your target. Train a strong, responsive hip with this exercise.

Boxing Landmine Right Cross - Part 2 of 3
Переглядів 9503 роки тому
Our next progression in the landmine cross is to finish the punch. That is, bring the full arm motion into the movement. HOWEVER… It is vital that we retain the main drivers of power that we learned in level 1 - the legs and hips. The arm will simply be the finishing touch. EXECUTION 1. Turn on the ball of the foot and rotate the hip around. 2. Maintain tension in the core so that the shoulders...

Have you ever seen an elite high jumper perform? The can jump over a bar that is 8 feet tall. You would think that for this level of power to be attained, they would need a deep bend in their jumping leg so they can have a long range of motion over which to apply power. Not the case. In fact, they have a very slight - an almost imperceptible - bend in their takeoff leg. The reason is the develo...

Let’s continue getting power from our hip rotation. Since the hip controls our center of gravity, and therefore the movement of our bodyweight, we need to make it rotate into a punch explosively. Like we saw in the Part II video, we need a proper base to deliver an effective hip rotation. Now we’ll look at what the lower body can do to augment the hip’s speed. EXECUTION If you’re bringing the r...

Slip Faster, Punch Harder

This exercise is simple and extremely effective for building high levels of strength in the obliques. Being able to instantaneously apply high levels of force in these muscles is extremely important for boxing. The defensive implications are obvious - slipping to the side needs to be executed with maximum speed if you want to avoid a punch. The offensive implication may be a bit less obvious - ...

We began looking at correct hip motion during the power punches in the Part 1 video. In this video we build upon that knowledge by making sure we have a proper stance. Again, this is when we want to deliver maximum power to our punches! There will be MANY times during the course of a boxing match when power isn’t the primary or even secondary concern. But when we want our bodies to deliver powe...

The #1 Exercise for Building Punching Power?
Thank you for keeping it so simple. 👍👍
Leave some calves for the rest of us.
😂
Wonderful explanation! The first time someone explains it in a way i can understand it. Thank you! ✌🏽
1. hip moves first, fist comes almost instantaneously after 2. keep the hips back, swivel hips 3. hip finishes in direction of punch/target 4. dont over or under rotate hips or punches
Do You use dit da jow after hitting the heavy bag?
Not sure what that is?
💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
thank you for these videos, as a tall guy at 6'4 at 230lbs its good to know my opponents strategy.
Keep it up 🥊
Great video!! Thanks man
Thanks!
Hips don't lie.
Thanks ı havent berçen able to clarify the hip movement but now ı can now thanks alpt
it actually starts in the feet up the leg’s through the hips it takes the complete movement as one to max power
Wonderful!
Coach please upload more. I am learning so much from you!!
A good little tutorial; on how to punch correctly, by pivoting the hips to generate power. This has to be practiced until it becomes second nature and you can execute it in a split second. As with everything in boxing, if you have to think about it you've already lost; muscle memory and hours and hours of practice and hard work are the only way to be the best fighter you can be. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks man
I’ve been watching videos about the falling step and no one could explain why gravity would help your power, but you gave the best explanation! I thought that going upwards would make my punches harder but actually it makes them slower.
Damn you quick af for size and age! Bet you’d still do damage in a match!
Great details, these show immediate results. Thank you
Thanks
A punch is initiated through the feet. A biomechanical sound strike is from the ground up.
hip twists first and beacause body being twisted creates elastic tension on chest and shoulders, punch is supplied by elastic power in addion to flexing power we indend when we throw a punch.
So hips and shoulders are key to athletic movement?
i've been doing muay thai for 3/4 months now and i can get a pretty nice motion for my cross/hooks, where there's decent power being delivered - but i really struggle with getting any real power behind my jabs ... it feels like i can't push off of my front foot in the way i can with my back foot, like it feels as though my front leg is not long enough or something, because my back foot wants to lift as well... and i just feel this complete lack of foundational power behind the motion. is it normal to struggle with jabs like this? any tips?
Drop part 4
Great video! It reminded me of Foremans heavy bag training
LOVE watching Big George just plow the bag
When you watch this guy do the correct movement with the hips not too much or not enough but just right it reminds me of Tyson's form when thrashing someone in the 80s.
Thank you 🙏 🙏 And agree - Tyson was exceptional in his ability to drive the punch with his hips & shoulders.
Thank you for this, the concept of lining up your power was exactly what I needed to understand!
Very difficult to hit the heavy bag bare handed. tried it once it grazed my knuckles very badly. Eespecially the joints so i'm guessing i'm not punching correctly.
All the more reason to get better at it! Start slow and punch INTO the bag. Don’t chop down
@PUNCHwithPOWER man, wish you would come up with a way to use the regular medicine ball for the exercise as that’s all most people, including myself, have.
Very clumsy. No firmness in the fists.
Good tip for how much to rotate. Not really addressed in other videos I’ve seen.
Thanks man 🙏
very effective - respect from vietnam
same thingking same thinking
You need a dvd Ant. It’s been a couple years since I watched your videos, but started hitting bag and did some light sparring this week. just got back on UA-cam looking at boxing stuff and was thinking the same thing. When I keep my elbow down, it’s a fine punch, just doesn’t have a lot of dick on it. Elbows down is good sometimes, as I am protected more. When I throw my jab now I keep the elbow down until about halfway or at the very end of punch and then lift it up behind the forearm with the elbow facing the wall. Very easy to get brainwashed into the rule of thumb thinking and this is the only way thinking, Instead of just listening to what feels right and works. Best of Luck. Gator 🐊
Great job man. I always enjoy your videos. What are your thoughts on not pivoting on the front hook? Joe Frazier taught not to pivot on the left. MMA guy Bas Rutten says not to pivot. What do you think?
🔥🔥🔥
You are absolutely underrated. A gem.
Thank you. If you have any questions just let me know!
Excellent
Thanks man 🙏
@@PUNCHwithPOWER your vids are great and I have seen many on UA-cam. Thank you and please keep up the good work
@@truthserum9456 thank you and appreciate all the good insights!
Only ting you need to think of is your skin on your hands. BEWARE. Gyms are DIRTY places. Never go completely bareback, wear gardening gloves 🧤. PLEASE AVOID INFECTION AND GANGRENE!!!!!
Any band Recommendation?. Thanks.
I just use a black or red mini band. Anything heavier and the damn bar snaps down too fast for me. You can get them from any speed shop.
@@PUNCHwithPOWER I own some bands But them Snapping is Definitely a Concern hence the Strength of it..look Forward to more videos like on Hand Strengthening, etc which also plays a part..Happy New Year!
@@666kinski thanks man. And I hear you - I used to be gun shy with them too but if I just keep an eye on their condition and replace as soon as they wear. I’ve been ok with them. Good luck.
I understand leg Power when coming up using ground force but I always thought that sitting into strikes used gravity as a second linear force! Dropping into the strike
Good thoughts. Problem with trying to transfer gravity into the strike is that it’s non-modifiable. Can’t be increased. I feel it’s much better to use the biggest muscles in the body to generate force for the punch. The trick of course is to use leg power without being off balance and exposed (standing tall). A quick drop allows you to do that. Just putting (hopefully) a better explanation to a technique that old timers have been teaching for years
@@PUNCHwithPOWER thank you very much for your precise explanation. I'm doing this stuff for 40 and and always learning from the good content providers of UA-cam
@@truthserum9456 thanks for the feedback!
One important thing you left out is that the opposite hip moves the opposite hip. You are not pushing with the punching hip but pulling with the opposite hip. There is no pushing in striking, only pulling.
Interesting thought. My issue with this is that power in punching results not only from the kinetic chain (like you describe above, rotating the hips and transferring the energy up through the torso and shoulders to fist) but also the forward displacement of the hips. Shifting the hips forward is the way to bring the body’s weight into the punch, increasing the mass part of the equation (F = ma). You can’t have a backward movement countering a forward movement of the hips or it’s inefficient. Make sense?
@@PUNCHwithPOWER yes and no because if you really personally investigate this and Russian boxers say no pushing in boxing only pulling. The body works like this. Think about when you walk, you don't push the lead hip but pull with the opposite hip. This is how the kinetic chain works but 90 % of people do not understand it.Also pushing with one hip uses only 50 %of the body.
@@truthserum9456 I think the difference here may be semantics. I agree that all movements in the body are ultimately pulls - that’s just how muscles work. But a backward displacement of the left hip for a right cross is counter-productive when punching for max power. If that displacement doesn’t occur than we’re talking about the same thing from 2 different viewpoints.
@@PUNCHwithPOWER great discussion. But remember punch power is made of 3 elements, momentum, linear force and then rotational force. In order to have rotational force the hips must cooperatively issue it. And if done perfectly at the last possible second NOT prior as that is the cardinal mistake made by 90 % of fighters. Thanks for the interaction and discussion
Good shit bro. A lot of people dont do this and it takes away so much follow through on hooks
Thanks man
Great Channel!!
Thank you man! 🙏
I can barely do it without the band
This is excellent video. Very helpful! Keep going!!

Great point coach, bare knuckle bag work helps you identify technical flaws
hello, which comb bones should we use without bare hand gloves when punching a pole or hook?
hello, which comb bones should we use without bare hand gloves when punching a pole or hook?
I do that but not 100% I feel like a 75% punch you can know if your techniqe is good, also it is fun to slap box the heavy bag, a good technique to fight someone in body armory for fun training stamina.
